Surfing in Fiji Islands

Internationally famous Namotu Left and Cloud Break in Mamanuca are recognized as the most challenging surfing breaks in the South Pacific. Both are reef breaks and definitively are not for beginner surfers!
There are two small resorts on tiny coral islands just off Namotu Reef which cater exclusively to surfers. Namotu is a very small island which offers accommodation in beachside bungalows. Tavarua island is a little larger. For vacationers with smaller budget, Seashell Cove, on the mainland, has more affordable accommodation rates, offering dormitories and camping in a secluded area, south of Nadi. Seashell Cove organizes daily transfers to Namotu reef. The beach at Seashell is not great, but there is always a good atmosphere, with many vacationers coming in and out; also, there exist the opportunity to explore the nearby town Nadi and its surrounding mountains.
Around Beqa and Kadavu islands, parts of the southern archipelago of Fiji Islands, surfers can find some excellent breaks. Frigate Passage, a left-hand break in the middle of the ocean, has a growing reputation amongst surfers for its reliable big barrels and long rides. Serua Rights is a long right hander with a hollow inside section across the passage. Accommodations in that resort are offered in two very basic surf camps on Yanuca island, built directly on the beach, off Beqa, and in a small resort on Nagigia island, off Kadavu.
Alternatively, Waidroka Bay, on the mainland, offers surf packages and frequent transfers to Frigates Passage as well as to Cloud Break in Mamanuca. Waidroka has several small cottages nestled on the beach, into fantastic rainforest. The seclusion feel is very strong there, but the vacationers have everything at disposal, from surfing and scuba-diving instruction to the best deep-sea fishing facilities in the country. Also, there are available several smaller breaks just off the resort.

Best beach resorts

The best surfing beach resorts in Fiji are on the southern coast of Viti Levu, the main island. Sigatoka has the largest and most reliable breaks, although undercurrents can be dangerous. Natadola beach is good for body surfing.
The best time for surfing in Fiji Islands is between April and December.
